Beholder is a video game about life in a totalitarian state.[1] The game was developed by Warm Lamp Games and published by Alawar Entertainment.[2]

Beholder was released on Steam on November 9, 2016 and supports Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS.

Story[edit]

Beholder is inspired by dystopian works of George Orwell,[3]Aldous Huxley, and Ray Bradbury.

The main character – Carl – is a government-installed landlord in a totalitarian state. The State appoints Carl to spy on the tenants. The primary task is to covertly watch the tenants and eavesdrop on their conversations. The player can bug apartments while tenants are away, search their belongings for whatever can threaten the authority of the State, and profile them. The State requires the player to report anyone capable of violating the laws or plotting subversive activities against the Government to the authorities.[4]

The game offers the player the choice of either following the commands of the Government or siding with the people who suffer from the oppressive directives.

Each game character has their own personality, circumstances, and issues. Every decision that a player makes affects the way the story unfolds. The game has multiple endings, each of them being a sum of the decisions made by the player.[5]

A beholder is an observer: someone who gains awareness of things through the senses, especially sight. If beauty is in the eye of the beholder, then the person who is observing gets to decide what is beautiful.

A common saying is 'Beauty is in the eye of the beholder,' which means beauty doesn't exist on its own but is created by observers. That famous quote can help you remember that a beholder is someone who sees or otherwise experiences things, becoming aware of them. To be a beholder, you have to pay attention. Different beholders might take in different aspects of the same event, like witnesses to a crime.
